Regular reminder that the guy who blew them up was mad that 0.1% of the aid budget for Afghanistan was going to restoring and protecting archaeology and historical sites, so he blew them up so he can get mo money fo dem programs.

Buddhists were actually going there for pilgrimage or to worship the big buddha, it wasn't just a historical artifact. If no one were to worship it, there is nothing wrong with preserving it for the sake of history, despite what ISIS(Mossad) does. Also

Yeah his explanation for his actions was completely moronic. He wanted more gibs but in the meantime completely sunk any hopes of Afghanistan getting sweet tourist money from the site. Muslims can't into economics, which is why so many Muslim countries still depend on resource based economies.

This, Afghan warlords don't give shit about their population. Western aid money is used to fund their wars killing each other instead of developing functional country.

        >Yes, thousands of years ago. The rest of the world knew better by 2001.
Wrong. Christians were destroying artifacts up to the 1800's.
Many ancient Menhir stones in France had metal crosses attached to their tops in the 19th century by Christians.
In Britain they were still breaking up old Pict stones to use in concrete. In Europe Christians were still melting down Bronze age artifacts to recover any gold and silver they might possess in the 19th century.
Today Christians don't give a flying frick about anything that isn't Christian. They merely avoid destroying artifacts simply because it is illegal now.

Christians were defacing pagan artifacts only 150 years ago. There is no "thousands of years ago".

Simple, they're the (openly) religious version of Commies. Completely, antithetically, psychotically opposed to everything but their own cult, and completely convinced that everything outside of it is automatically and irredeemably evil that needs to be destroyed. At the very least the Commies don't pretend that everyone was born as a communist.

If this were true they would have been wiped out centuries or a millennium ago. There wouldn't be anything left to destroy today.

Most ancient and medieval structures in Europe were destroyed or repurposed by Europeans. The only reason Rome and parts of Italy are preserved the way they are is because most of it was buried in soil until the 20th century. Mussolini's regime alone dug a lot of it up. Even the greatest leader of modern Europe, Napolean, went around vandalizing and stealing across multiple continents.

They repeatedly tried to destroy monuments throughout history, most attempts just failed due to lack of technology. Early cannons and guns weren't strong enough to destroy the Buddha carving.

The IEA wasn't cohesive back then, so different factions did different things and it created trouble. There were also a lot of rival and foreign groups operating in the country too. In 1998, eleven Iranian diplomatic staff were murdered by Sipah-e-Sahaba which is a Pakistan-based group. The tension brought Iran and the IEA to the brink of war. Iran was already backing the Northern Alliance rebels.

The IEA today hasn't been vandalizing any historical artefacts, from what I understand. Had the rest of the world not ignored the suffering of Afghans and engaged with Afghanistan more proactively and productively between the 1990s and early-2000s, then it wouldn't have even happened. It only happened in March 2001 despite the IEA being in power for several years.

On the other hand, it's Salafi Revisionists that go around actually destroying history on a large scale. They did it in the Arabian Peninsula in the past and they've been doing it across Subsaharan Africa, Libya, Syria and Iraq in more recent times. Salafists not only target pre-Islamic and non-Muslim structures, they also target Muslim historical structures. The IEA doesn't destroy mausoleums and in fact Kandahar, which is the IEA's heartland, has always had them.

If pre-Islamic archeology needed to destroyed outright then it would have been done over a thousand years ago or during the first few centuries of Muslim rule. It is insane to assume that people today need to destroy what wasn't destroyed by far more authoritative figures before us. Salafist Arabs destroyed historical structures and built hotels and malls in their place and then went on to spend billions on Western art including shirk and even a fake Da Vinci painting of Jesus.
