It is entirely possible for both the stories (most likely for the more deranged/zealous devotees) and the majority of Christians (most likely more casual ones) to exist at once.
Most of the Christians I meet are laid back. All the same the Christians my family knows are trying very hard to fit in. For context it's because my dad is extremely preachy (even in a roughneck line of work where everyone swears up and down) and he is also stuck in the conspiracy theory and AI generated rapture clickhole of youtube. My grandfather is a pastor. The people that don't know my folks are more stable whereas the people who do know them are extremely agreeable and so nice it sounds fake and are generally unpleasant to engage with. Plain as day.

Christian parenting values often incompatible with what their zoomer children want in their lives. Many christian parents just can't accept that their child live under the same roof as theirs without sharing their values and so famillies break up in an explosive way and its members end up blaming each others for the lost cohesion in the household.
Christianity could get away with being a cult for squares back when they literally controlled media and decided what books would be in the library and what TV shows could or couldn't show or say.
