How do atheists explain ghosts?

The world is full of haunted places. And eye witness testimony of ghost sightings exist wherever humans inhabit a place. These spirits are evidence of the afterlife; that death and the destruction of our bodies is not the end of life but simply a cross-roads into another world where we exist as immaterial spirits.

Atheists talk about being super rigorous empiricists. And yet they are ready to dismiss the eye witness accounts of thousands of people who have encountered a ghost just so they can continue to believe their ontological assumptions are true.

    Ghosts aren't real though. This guy explains all the video and most of the ghosts are surveillance cameras that don't take enough frames per second so it looks ghostly when a normal person or pet walks by. And those ghost listening things that scan radio are stupid.

      Back around the time lo-framerate CCTV cameras first became available there was a whole conspiracy theory around cryptids called "rods", all these crazy ideas about how these flying creatures could only be captured by digital surveillance and how they might be the origins of fairy myths and shit.

      Obviously it was just bugs getting smeared over a few frames, but it didn't stop people from hocking books about their theories or rambling on cryptid message boards and shit.

      People are stupid and have overactive imaginations.

        The lights were to consistent and first you saw a flash to the right then what looked like just a car off in the distance driving and that's light that has made it through the trees. Where I live we had something similar and it was snowmoblies just driving through the woods at night.

    Ghosts aren't real. All ghost stories are lies or exaggerations. Your mind is dependent on brain function and ceases to exist when the brain function stops. Anyone who believes in ghosts needs to get their head out of their ass.

I later went back to Catholicism. God is really all we need in life and death.

    >These spirits are evidence of the afterlife;

    Not in the religious sense. Earth-bound ghosts are very much not evidence of any afterlife... just of existence after death. Afterlifes are non-Earthly realms, sometimes created by deities to punish/reward the dead, but other times not the work of deities.

    Ghosts, if they existed, would only prove that there's some mechanism whereby the mind survives the death of the body. But ghosts don't exist.

    Fun fact: In the early 1980s every university in the English-speaking world had a parapsychology department. Just a couple of years later, all universities everywhere had dissolved the parapsychology department. Why? Because once Ghostbusters hit theaters, it was all too absurd for them to waste money on the nonsense.

        You're brain was malfunctioning because you were on drugs, or sleep-deprived, or whatever.

        No ghosts. No room for them in the standard model. Sad, I wish some of the people I loved were still around somehow. No room for wishes in the standard model either.
