Orthodox churches exist to serve as government shills in Orthodox countries. Orthodox churches in places where they're a minority don't really have much of a purpose so that's not very surprising.
The most fanatical of Christians turned to religion because the world scares them. Rather than grappling with their fear and studying that which frightens them they shy away and cower behind a book they've never read.
