Why is it that. The most popular religions in the world also happen to be the most hateful and intolerant ?

Because you don't get to 4 billion followers by being idle and meek.

The whole reason Christianity beat out paganism is because it was exclusivistic.

If you have convert to the Christian God, you lose a follower of Zeus.

If a worshipper of Zeus starts worshipping Mithras, he still is worshipping Zeus.

people are naturally drawn to being fearful of the other, intolerant of change, and an overall urge to thrust one's own social norms on others

most problems pointed at religion are just deeper problems with the human psyche - religion just gives people a good excuse to be buttholes

Quite literally the entire point of Christianity is the pursuit of becoming like God and acquiring His omnibenevolence. Notice how the enemies of God cannot attack Him directly so they rely on petty strawman attacks instead.

god is described in the bible as an butthole, so no I think this critique is a direct attack.

Most people are able to justify bad or hurtful behavior by appealing to some sort of greater good.
People do the same with things other than god too.Communism, the nation, the market, etc. have all served a similar purpose for some people.

Hateful and intolerant of what? It’d be pretty Self defeating if a religion’s whole purpose was antinatalism and human-hate

Because the mass of people just happen to attribute whatever beliefs they have to the religion instead of actually attaining a rational understanding of the dogma. It is the same reason if 99% of the world were atheist you would be questioning why there are so many atheist buttholes.

The more intolerant a society/community is the more successful it will be. Think about why the Haredim are outbreeding other israelites, why Mormons outbreed small-o orthodox Christians, why Muslims outbreed most other religious groups in the US, and so forth.

    >muh birthrates

Sure, that's said a lot, but okay, it is not the only benefit. Being intolerant of other practices and beliefs helps a religious community uphold its own and resist assimilation pressure.

    > Because they eliminated the competition.

They either killed or converted any other religion that came in contact with them.

Because when you're on top, you quickly forget about all the tolerance you preached.

That's the interesting difference between Bible and Quran.
For all the time the NT was written, Christianity was a minority religion, so it was all about tolerance and getting along with people. Christians ignored that the moment they came into power.
But Islam managed to win out while the Quran was being written. That's why you see lots of shit about tolerance in the Quran during the times where Islam wasn't dominant. Then when they gained power it changes its tone and is all about killing all infidels.
