Why are atheists smarter than religious people?

religious people aren't stupider they've just been raised by people who convinced them of magical thinking at an age when they were super vulnerable to manipulation

then it's reinforced by living in an environment that encourages you to ignore critical thinking and buy our shit

Depends what you want to get out of it.

If you're not happy with the scientific or metaphysical arguments for total atheism, Deism or some form of universalism fits the bill. You can believe that a God created the universe, and maybe even that there's an objective and universal good or morality out there that transcends the individual experience, without contradicting the nuts-and-bolts findings of modern physics or requiring you to subscribe to some specific dogma that doesn't stand up to logical scrutiny.

If you're looking for a sense of community on the other hand, choose whatever religion is close to you and has a community you would like to be a member of. A lot of atheists have this idea that if you "believe" in a religion you need to believe that all of the scripture is word-for-word true in a material sense. But that's not necessarily true. A religion can be a bunch of straight up mumbo jumbo and still provide a valuable sense of community bonding through its rituals. Just because the holy book that binds your community together says a dude lived for 900 years and a snake convinced a b***h to eat an apple doesn't mean you need to believe those things literally happened in history. I bet if you gave a thousand Christians truth serum and asked them, less than half would believe those events literally happened. Many probably don't actually believe in Jesus or God.

I know this might seem like a moronic LARP, but I think buddhism

there's already a very common misconception among westerners that buddhism is somehow atheistic, it can make for a good rabbit hole/slippery slope into spirituality.
