Adaptation to a different type of ennemy
Principate armies would have probably folded even faster than dominate armies when facing late Rome ennemies

This lol. Gallienus made some questionable decisions, but reforming the army actually worked.

      Never happened

This lol. Gallienus made some questionable decisions, but reforming the army actually worked.

Gallienus didn't reform the army. He effectively did the same as every Emperor until the actual reforms of Diocletian and Constantine. Adapted to a situation using the current military.

    left image is ahistorical
right is a cherrypicked image of a late roman infantryman with little armor

Left is historical too, it just has some exagerated elements
Left is just what principate armies looked like in the 1/2 centuries

          Its mainly historical
Its just the cat symbol and the arm braces that arent historical

"mainly historical" ergo not entirely historical ergo ahistorical
theres also the cape, weird cingulum on his legs, nonsensical leather straps, and I cant even tell if hes supposed to be a centurion

I never really understood how segmentata was more useful compared to mail. It looks like you could get nasty cuts from the plate edges if you fall down or get rolled. It also would slow down troops more if they were fighting in hot environements, the steel would be basicaly get superheated from the rays of the sun in a desert and you would be walking around wearing a furnace.

All those problems are also issues with poorly burred lamellar and cuirasses.

Lorica Segmentata were really well made with there being evidence for cross laminating the individual plates with steel and iron. I think it had to provide greater protection for them to invest in it so much.

It’s faster and easier to manufacture, lighter than mail, and gives better protection from arrows and blunt trauma.
The Roman’s used scale, segmentation and mail simultaneously even in the principate, it’s just a matter of what’s available and what they issue you, the same way that if you’re in the Army today you might be issued a gen 4 IOTV, a gen 3 IOTV, an MSV, or a plate carrier (I was issued all of these in a single enlistment, for instance.) I’m sure it did get very hot though, and I’ve heard (but don’t know for sure) that segmentata took two guys to put on because the straps were in the back, so you’d lace up your buddies cuirass and then turn around and he’d tie yours.
