The holy trinity of?

I'm sure this is a normie opinion, but I love all three of these movies. If you disagree, what are your top three? Not looking to debate, just to share evergreen animated films about giant fighting robots.
(I like the shows too, but this thread is specifically about film, cinema, and kino.)

Just ignore them, let them embarrass themselves.

I think I agree with you OP, Patlabor movies are another good contender to be up there as well.
Though if I were to come up with a list like this I'd personally make it standalone movies that don't require you to watch a series.
        So in that case.

        >Macross DYRL
        >GITS
        >Gundam F91

I showed DYRL to my friends who had never seen Macross, they didn't really "get" it. They understood it, but I don't think the plot points resonate strongly unless you've seen the show and know all the intricacies of the characters. But ideally, I would agree with you and do the same thing. It's just hard because the standalone movies are so rarely as good as the ones attached to a series.

        Ideon: Be Invoked
        Encounters In Space
        Robot Jox

These picks have a lot of soul. You have great taste, if not a little uncommon.

    In no particular order
    >CCA
    >Patlabor 2
    >GITS Innocence
I like DYRL, but that's all. EOE has some fantastic animation, but unless you like jerking off over Anno's mindset there's not much more there if you've seen the show.

      Anonymous

Patlabor 2 is a good movie, but the mecha stuff was underwhelming for me. I remember liking the stuff in the OVA a lot more.
I disagree about Evangelion being shallow, but I can understand that take away, especially considering its meme-status online. What puts EOE up there for me is how the animation is elevated from the show.
I also liked GITS 2 a lot, I need to rewatch it. I've seen the first one several times but the second only once.

I don't think the mecha action in the Patlabor movies is on the quality of the show, let alone the other movies I listed. But as movies in their own right, I agree they're good.

Can anyone provide me with good mecha recs, whether it be movies or series, or even video games or manga, one off or otherwise, where the protagonist is a middle-ish aged person? Or where a lot of the cast is at least? Something not exhibiting the cliched shonen thing with teenagers and young twenty-somethings being the movers and shakers and sole protagonists. Thanks for any recs I get, friends.
pic possibly unrelated, i'm not the judge of that

Only stuff I can think of is Cowboy Bebop, LoGH, and Ghost in the Shell but those shows aren't really about piloting mechs.

I'm sure the characters in Gasaraki aren't that old but they're all older in general. The show is also a lot more mature. Only mecha show I've seen that doesn't feel like it was made with children in mind. If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

The rice coup plot was interrsting, but ultimately the protagonist looks like a young teen wrapped up in a romeo and juilet plot with a teenage girl, and his sister has a crush on him.

          Anonymous

          True.
          >rice coup
Lol. This is the main thing I remembered about the show, I forgot about the sister entirely until you brought her up just now. I went through my entire completed list on MAL and couldn't find anything that fit your criteria, sorry. I think anime, and mecha anime especially, is just commercially propped up by in majority by children, or by people with escapist sensibilities reminiscing about their times as children/young adults.

I thought it was, but I showed it to my friends who did not seem to enjoy it very much. Could just be that they're not incredibly into mecha, but I honestly think the characters only really work when you see them in a longer form story. Maybe you don't need all 39 episodes, but cramming all those character arcs into a 2 hours movie really makes it feel bloated if you didn't see the show. Also, the general plot will be easy to follow, but some of the more specific things will be lost and glossed over.

Just watch the show when you have the time. You're on /m/, you will like it.

The movie completely skips any introduction. The character work is fine, but completely skipping the intro is asking too much from new viewers. It was clearly made for people who were already Macross fans.

True, I probably thought I could sit there and explain the basics to my friends and that would be enough. I don't remember, it was a while ago. Nowadays I don't recommend/show it to anyone, I try to get people to watch the original show.

I understand its a bit of a let down, especially if you saw it all the way back when it came out. Hell, even if you watch it now its a let down. Buts its animation is frequently beautiful and there's a handful of really great lines. I would say its also way more cinematic than most of the show, and that was my main reason for including it. I recently rewatched it, and was really surprised how good it looked. I remembered it looking good, but it gave DYRL a run for its money in some scenes.
