so i was thinking more about religion, why does it seem like the idea of god is often presented throughout the bible in this authoritarian type of way. He is said to be all loving and benevolent then next he is basically shooting down lightning, causing giant floods and complete reckoning causing believers to be in awe and fear of his power, there is kind of this split in the bible wherein instead of being able to easily define nature and how unexpected and chaotic it can be, they just liken it to God but without capturing the whole character of nature instead just saying it's all like god and shit.

Why do people who believe in the bible view god in this authoritarian way? I find that religion often isnt very mystical, it just seems to equate everything to this all powerful being.

do you think there are any mystical qualities do the way the world and universe works? we dont live in this ebb and flow of a great cosmic mysterious universe you are just being commanded about by god all the time and being shown mercy because he could kill you but chooses not to.

Why is there such a big deal made in religion about "sin" but yet often times the only mention of sin is the commandments and breaking the them, thats the only mention of sin.

isnt the bible basically just saying "if you dont break the law, live a lawful and orderly life you are good lol" and here is the religion following that, along with a very authoritarian god.

i feel like religion is mostly made up of following rules in that religion, when in fact i think there could be a lot more to spirituality then just following orders and obeying rules

religion is following orders and not breaking the law

      >control
This is pretty much it. People will make up any bullshit just to gain control over others.

      Control and money.

Christianity was created to bring peace to the earth as that was God's will and possibly a fulfillment of a request of his followers. Since God is powerful, it is the reason why people should fear God.

If you had the chance to make a vow to God like Jesus did, would you do it?

I just find it hard to wrap my head around believing in detail this conception of a God. It comes across a little irrational you hear in scientific studies that some people are more prone to believing in god and it almost seems that way, like it doesn't quite make sense to me.

I used to believe in God but the more I think about the concept the more it makes me feel confused and liek I am on psychedlics. The idea of God is really spacey and out there, you know?

God kills the earth's population because of sin (like shit they didn't obey the law) but leaves the devil alone. But I mostly mean I have no way of knowing how the universe was created and how some being could be...see it doesn't even quite make sense, there's an all powerful being that is almost like a human being, does he control the entire universe?

I guess I have always more closely looked at it like Taoism, there's energy but there's some powerful force in the universe, maybe it doesn't control everything, but it has an effect and influence on the world still, like the universe I see it like this rich tapestry.

No this authoritarian God man that gets mad if you break the law but doesn't destroy the person who is behind all nefarious actions

I think understanding our relationship to God is much like a 14 year old child playing an mmorpg on their computer and we're just npcs or the actual character in the game God is manipulating. I don't believe in objectively good or bad but rather with or against God's will. Satan literally means opposer.

That sounds horrible to me and like a somewhat hellish reality but it's interesting to hear your input

      > it is the reason why people should fear God.
On one hand it's good to force people to stop sinning and fricking up their and other's lives, on the other you never get to see the true nature of that person in fear.
You see people's true nature when their guard is completely down, and they can do what they want without consequences

There is, it's just not what you're looking for.

As a religious person, ngl God scares me, but also fills up the hole in my heart for an ultimate daddy figure that no human, no matter how daddy they are, can. I don't even care how wack that is. Some of the rules are very hard, but imagining an afterlife where I can always be with daddy gives me more of a will than any amount of money, drug highs or shiny commodities ever could in a million years. Even if I could have absolute control and dominion over every last thing in this world, I'd still turn it down if it meant I could be with daddy. It wasn't any of this stuff that convinced me to believe in God again, though (was not religious for a little under 15 years), but that's another story.
