By being married to an emperor or by being the mother of one (she was both, at different times in her life)

I've been listening to the history of china podcast and the guy really goes out of his way to shill her rule. He makes excuses for everything bad that she does or happens in her rule. The frontiers collapsed, the economy went into freefall, the imperial court had an extremely high turnover rate and many massacres of the bureaucracy. Compared to the golden era of Li Shimin her rule was a huge step down. Hardly a great emperor as some people claim. And sure the "confucian" scholars hated her but in their claim to be corrective this podcaster and the other historians covering her go further in their praise than people like Sima Guang do in their hate

Tang China went from destroying the turkic khanates and bordering persia to the turkic khaganate restoring itself under her rule.

This is his summary for the episode 2 episodes after Wu Zetian. After gushing about her in her last episode.
      >Wu Zetian’s grandson Li Longji (aka Xuanzong of Tang) is left to pick up the pieces of 50+ years’ worth of overindulgence, royal excess, and the rampant deconstruction of the entire imperial bureaucratic apparatus

I get the others, though to be fair going against Rome was very long odds for men as well. But what's wrong with Theodora?

She didn't really do anything, other than being the long-time empress of an extremely notable Emperor. Despite this, shes weirdly well-known and celebrated.

She actually fricked up the religious situation even more

Completely forgot what she even supposedly did, except maybe kill/torture people?
This is definitely true though. Especially Boudicca. It makes for a nice story but she really fricked up and arguably directly caused the death of Celtic culture by losing despite the huge numerical advantage

Was cleopatra that bad? Seems like she did her best to use her… assets to preserve her kingdom

She could've navigated Egypt through roman subjugation as a semi-independent client state but nooooo, she had to frick high-ranking generals and claim half the empire in her inheritance, inevitably resulting in her BTFOing by Chudgustus

It gives them a break from claiming that every man mentioned in primary sources was actually secretly gay/trans/black.

I think it is just a case of overcorrection syndrome. Her ruthlessness being so unparrelled, especially for a woman made me not liked leaving her with few actual accomplishments to be remembered that it is felt she has to be risen up.

Wu Zetian was the latter on steroids

Wu Zetian just had her rivals killed. Lü Zhi had their eyes gouged out, limbs cut off, and kept them alive at the bottom of a latrine.

    >why?
cultural marxism in which people groups are separated into oppressed and oppressor. Women are considered oppressed nowadays.
